Recipe: Sauerkraut

The Best Sauerkraut


  • 1 lb Sauerkraut, drained but not rinsed (bag or jar, not canned)
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 red apple cored and sliced thin (skin left on)
  • 1 small onion sliced thin
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds
  • 1 potato, peeled and grated
  • 1 c water or dry white wine


  • Mix all ingredients in a large fry pan and cook covered over medium low heat until hot and onion and apple are tender
  • Put bratwurst links on top of the sauerkraut as it is cooking. This will steam the brats and the drippings will give the sauerkraut a great flavor.
